The importance of Dental Therapists for Dentists and patients
We speak to Fiona Sloss, Dental Therapist at Clyde Munro Dental Group, about what the role means to her and how dental therapy skills can be better utilised within the practice.
Could you outline your career so far?
I started working as a Dental Nurse when I was 19 years old, but I wanted to be more hands-on and involved with patient care. I took the online access to higher education diploma and was later accepted by the University of Sheffield to study hygiene and therapy when I was about 21. It was a fantastic course and I couldn’t recommend it enough – there was a practical approach with a lot of emphasis on therapy and we were trained alongside dentists.
I studied during Covid, which brought its own challenges. We could only see a limited number of patients each week, which delayed graduation. I was therefore pleased to find a job in a great practice, which later joined the Clyde Munro group. It meant moving to a small Scottish town, which might not have been the easiest relocation, but my practice colleagues helped me find an Airbnb until I could purchase my own place which was amazing. My family is Scottish so I have spent much time here, and I can’t speak highly enough of the country and the people.
What do you enjoy most about the dental therapist role?
Definitely the patient interaction! I enjoy getting to prevent problems, while also being able to help people out of problems that have already occurred. Seeing patients leave the practice happier than when they arrived is the best.
I also really enjoy the restorative work and in future would like to focus more on the cosmetic side. Between Direct Access and potential incoming changes to the dental hygienist/therapist’s prescribing rights, there are many things we can do – and even more we will be able to do – in these areas.
How important is the role of dental therapist in practice?
For patients, the dental therapist can help shorten wait times for treatment. My scope of practice is smaller than a dentist’s, but that means I focus specifically on the procedures I do offer. I also usually have more time in appointments to dedicate to prevention and patient education, which is essential for their current and future oral health. Especially when it comes to children, I find I am able to send more time with them than a dentist feasibly could.
From the practice’s perspective, my role as a dental therapist allows the dentists to focus on more advanced treatments. One of the dentists I work with likes to concentrate on implants, for example, so I take on more of the restorative work that his patients need to allow him time for this. That’s where I think the dental therapist can be best utilised in practice – working alongside dentists with a special interest in a specific area. However, the ability to share the workload is useful for many practices, especially given that most are fit to bursting with patients right now!
Why do you think the dental therapist may be under-utilised in practice and across dentistry as a whole?
In many cases, I think dentists aren’t fully aware of what a dental therapist can do. The sooner that dentists understand the dental therapist’s scope, the better. That’s why I believe my university training alongside dentists was so beneficial. Those dentists could see the value of dental therapy for them and their patients from the beginning of their careers.
What is one thing that every practice team can implement to enhance the benefits of a dental therapist?
Communication is essential. I know that I can speak to a dentist whenever I have a query or want to confirm a course of treatment. This ensures continuity of care for the patient and also shows the dentist which areas I am most confident in. This is important for building their trust in my skills – which is the second most important aspect of utilising the skill mix in the practice.
What is it like working with Clyde Munro?
On a day-to-day basis, the practice hasn’t changed since joining Clyde Munro. It’s good to know that high standards are maintained in order to meet expectations across the group, but our clinic was already in a good place. Clyde Munro has helped me introduce the GBT kit into my work, funding and supporting the change of process this required, which I really appreciated. I have been using this now for over a year and patient feedback is incredible!
What are your thoughts on the Dental Therapist Support Programme Clyde Munro offers?
I’m a big believer in this programme. If it had been available when I started at the practice, I would have raced to get involved. It’s providing a level of support that is just not available elsewhere. To have the support of the dentists in your practice echoed by the group on a wider level means a lot. It also provides a great opportunity to meet other dental therapists and hygienists – we’re often the only dental therapist/hygienist in the practice so being able to connect with more professionals in our position is amazing. In addition, Clyde Munro’s Dental Therapist Programme covers useful clinical topics which enhance the skills of newly qualified professionals or offer a valuable refresher for those who have not had a chance to utilise their therapy skills for some time. It’s all about building competence and confidence.
Any final thoughts?
The more we get used to working as a team, and the sooner all professionals become comfortable working together in this way, the better dentistry will be further down the line. For dentists beginning to work with a dental therapist, there is going to be a learning curve, but if you don’t start you won’t ever see the benefits.
Clyde Munro has recently launched a Therapist Programme, designed this to help recently graduated Dental Therapists consolidate and expand their clinical capabilities in a range of relevant areas. To learn more, visit careers.clydemunrodental.com/therapist-support-programme/
AI-supported workflows at Clyde Munro
In the modern dental arena, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly having an impact on how dentistry is practised. From the professional workflow to the patient experience, utilising AI-driven technologies affords a myriad of advantages. Clyde Munro understands the crucial role that this plays in helping to improve the quality of patient care delivered, which is why it is investing in its practice facilities. Callum Graham, Clinical Director of the group, provides some insights into what is available and why…
AI has given us the opportunity to streamline the way that we deliver care to our patients. It helps us to communicate better with patients, showing them radiographic images and clinical photography in ways that help improve their understanding of their oral health and/or their treatment needs. We can also provide digitally-generated images and models of how their teeth will likely look after treatment, before we start. This makes communication easier and helps with effective patient management, diagnostic accuracy and in ensuring patients have the correct information to make informed decisions, a pre-requisite in the consent process.
But it is not only the patient interaction that benefits. A lot of AI is used in the smile design process, allowing clinicians to plan for implants, veneers and crowns, bridgework or dentures more effectively. The software can be utilised to plan these treatments and ensure that the new smile fits in harmoniously with the patient and their expectations. It makes these things a little bit easier and a lot more predictable.
Of course, there are still some challenges that must be navigated to implement AI successfully in the practice. As with any new technology there is a learning curve and introducing AI-assisted workflows requires adaptation from the dental team. Some dentists may feel that it’s taking the clinical decision away from them, but this is absolutely not the case. The software is there to support their decision-making process.
AI-supported workflows are available in different forms at Clyde Munro. Firstly, we use Pearl Second Opinion® which provides AI-assisted support for clinicians when reporting on radiographs. It highlights potential areas of concern or potential disease which the clinician can correlate with their findings, ensuring that nothing is missed. It helps to save time and the report can be colour co-ordinated and marked to improve the patient’s understanding too. We have received very positive feedback from patients who are blown away by the technology our dentists are using. They appreciate the investment in their care and are typically more interested in and engaged with what the dentist is saying. Treatment acceptance is higher as well, with the AI report validating the dentist’s recommendations.
We also use Dental Monitoring, available throughout Clyde Munro, which supports orthodontic treatment by ensuring that tooth movements are progressing as expected using remote technology. Fewer practice visits are required and any issues are identified as soon as they arise with the weekly upload of progress photos.
I would definitely recommend that colleagues get involved and try AI technology for themselves. It may take some time to get used to it, but it can become a very useful part of the workflow, saving time and making processes more robust.
Regardless of what stage you have reached in your career, Clyde Munro offers all the support and opportunity you need to excel. Contact our team at joinus@clydemunrodental.com to discover the right position for you!
Investing in our people and their futures through our Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre
What makes an excellent working environment? Well, a number of factors will need to be considered, including the opportunities presented for professional growth and development. That’s why – amongst various other valuable offerings – Clyde Munro Dental Group has prioritised education and training for all members of its practices with the dedicated Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre.
What’s the goal? To provide all professionals with access to an array of courses that will develop skills, support career aspirations and inspire greatness. This training facility is an investment from Clyde Munro into its people, their futures and the quality of patient care that can be delivered in practices across Scotland. Even in its first year of being established, the centre has already benefited hundreds of individuals keen to advance their knowledge and confidence in a variety of clinical and non-clinical areas.
Ensuring the relevance of topics covered for dentists, the course list has been designed based on feedback from associates. We asked, they answered and we responded. We are also proud to offer training led by some of our own clinicians who have extensive talents and experience in the educational field too. All courses for dentists are offered at significantly subsidised rates, as are programmes for dental nurses, VTs, dental hygienists/therapists and practice managers – with many of these delivered for free.
In 2024, there is a wide range of topics being explored. For dentists, these include endodontics, IPR and retention, pain management, composite veneers, crown prep, oral surgery and CBCT training, with a mixture of hands-on practical courses and theoretical programmes. Dental nurses have gained access to dedicated education in orthodontic photography and impression taking, with all team members benefiting from mental health first aider and safeguarding training.
Aside from the quality and accessibility of the training and education available, Clyde Munro has also created exceptional, purpose-built training facilities which further set them apart in the profession. On the premises, we have a teaching room with nine phantom heads, adjacent to a fully functional dental surgery with comprehensive AV set-up, as well as a CBCT room. This means that there is capacity for clinicians to observe live surgeries from the room or remotely, enriching the learning experience significantly.

To equip this facility, Clyde Munro chose to work with a leading supplier of dental technology that shares the same ethos for clinical excellence – Dentsply Sirona. Already an equipment partner of the group, the company was the natural choice for the facility. Dentsply Sirona’s proven track record is a testament to Clyde Munro’s investment in quality in every area of the business.
Many of the courses are available to professionals outside the Clyde Munro group as well, though our own members receive significant discounts and can access an online portal for easy booking, CPD certificate storage and more.
So, no matter your role in the practice, how long you have been working in dentistry or what your career ambitions are, Clyde Munro invests in you and your future. The Dental Job Diaries Episode 12: Discover Clyde Munro’s Innovative Dental Therapist Programme
In this podcast, David McColl, Associate Dentist and Clinical Advisor at Clyde Munro, talks about the new Therapist Programme. From Dental Therapists that qualify to enrol in this initiative, to how this will benefit their career, and all the advantages that come with it.
‘’We want to give a support network, because we really believe that it is all about support. You don’t want to feel alone if things go wrong, you need someone to turn to for advice, support and mentoring. Having the right person, delivering the right care, at the right time is really key here.’’
Transitioning from VT to Associate Dentist with Clyde Munro Dental Group
It doesn’t matter how long you have been working in dentistry, what you have achieved so far or what your career aspirations are, Clyde Munro offers supported development opportunities for you. In fact, we are proud to provide a comprehensive pathway for all our dentists, with ongoing education and training taking clinicians from VT to associate dentist, and later on to lecturer, teacher, mentor or associate with special interests.
From the very beginning, we help dentists create an effective development plan for them. We have a huge network of highly experienced dentists and mentors to offer advice and guidance, enabling all young dentists to discover the right pathway for them. But this support doesn’t stop there. Education and training are available to all our dentists at every stage of their career. With practices across Scotland, we always have great opportunities for dentists looking for different responsibilities and new challenges.
Post-qualification
Clyde Munro has various VT training practices set up specifically to enable VTs to consolidate, advance and broaden their skills in a safe and effective way. We give them access to cutting-edge technologies, encouraging them to deliver the highest quality patient care from the very beginning. With a network of talented and highly experienced clinicians across the group, we offer expert mentorship for VTs throughout their training.
The standard VT study days are complemented by Clyde Munro’s own Best Foot Forward Programme, further improving each dentist’s transition into an associate role. This provides additional training days throughout the year, covering important topics that we feel VTs need to understand as they lay solid foundations for a long and successful career in dentistry. Sessions explore technology that utilises artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on patient care, including how it facilitates the reading of radiographs for accurate diagnostics and improves patient communication.
The programme also aims to build confidence in endodontics, help individuals maximise opportunities as self-employed contractors, and enable dentists to better manage their stress for enhanced wellbeing. We appreciate the pressure that dentists can be under, so we feel it is especially important to help our clinicians optimise their own physical and mental health, as well as their patients’.
Dr Paul Capanni said in his VT year:
“Working within Clyde Munro, you feel like you’re a part of something bigger. There’s a lot of support in everything from clinical aspects to logistical and financial. It’s nice to be at the forefront of digital dentistry and to be exposed to things you might otherwise not be exposed to. It’s a good group to work for; they are always investing in you in some way.”
Early careers
Beyond VT, Clyde Munro provides the Flying Start Programme. This initiative continues the support dentists need to make the very most of their initial years as an associate. It provides training on a range of clinical, financial and business topics. From further education in endodontics to ethical selling, optimising digital workflows and improving sustainability, the programme explores all the areas that clinicians need to know about.
Dr James Campbell commented:
“The Flying Start Programme has been integral to my personal and professional development. It means that there is a network of peers and more experienced colleagues to turn to for support whenever I need it. The practical advice, help and training received from experts on aesthetic treatment plans and patient communication has been most helpful for me.”
Later career
Even once dentists are established within their careers, Clyde Munro continues to offer education, CPD and development opportunities. Have a special interest in a certain area? We can help. Looking to start teaching or mentoring others? We have a network for you to support. Learning never stops in dentistry, and neither does the support from Clyde Munro. Whatever your career aspirations, we have the passion, support and facilities to make them happen!
Dr Bruce Duguid said:
”I have been a GDP for 28 years and working with Clyde Munro for about 2 years. The biggest reason I enjoy working with them is the huge support network available. It’s a very large family of dentists, rather than an isolated group of practitioners. Dentistry can be a very lonely and isolated profession. As such, it’s nice to have other professionals to reach out to and get support from if needed.”

Living the Scottish Dream
No matter how long you have worked in dentistry, where you studied, how you have developed your skills or what your future ambitions are, it is essential to ensure your own wellbeing throughout your career. Where you chose to live will have an impact on your happiness and quality of life. In particular, it is important for your home environment to meet your social, physical and mental needs, which in turn will influence your health and wellbeing at any stage of life.
For many people, living in Scotland affords all manner of benefits, making this a fantastic place for dental professionals of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs and aspirations. If you’re looking for a change, or ready for the next phase of your career, Scotland could provide the answers you need. There’s also the benefit of excellent healthcare and education, as well as a potentially lower cost of living compared to other parts of the UK.
An unparalleled landscape
When thoughts turn to Scotland, the immediate image is often one of rolling hills, luscious greenery, mountainous terrain and historic stone buildings. Indeed, the Highlands are a globally-renowned destination for hiking, mountain climbing and wildlife watching, with thousands of people flocking to these stunning open spaces every year to enjoy the great outdoors. Plus, with more than 550 golf courses to choose from, beautifully unspoiled beaches along the coastline and hundreds of islands to visit, the country offers a diverse and charming backdrop to daily life.
Culture and history
The vibrant culture is a major part of life for the Scottish people, who proudly celebrate their heritage through food and drink, festivals and music, and the traditional kilts in the tartan of their families, of course! Few will have visited the country without trying the famous haggis dish or a glass of whisky. As such, Scotland is widely regarded as a friendly and welcoming place to be.
For those with an interest in history, the region boasts the remnants of fascinating tales from Roman soldiers, Vikings, noble clansmen, ruling monarchs and more. World heritage sites include the Antonine Wall, New Lanark cotton mill and the Fourth Forth Bridge, amongst many other landmarks that are well-worth a visit.
Job Opportunities
Despite the challenges experienced worldwide in recent years, the Scottish economy seems to be bouncing back strongly. GDP growth was 4.9% in 2022, higher than the UK average of 4.1%. Among the top industries demonstrating positive growth have been creative markets, energy (especially renewable), food and drink, life sciences, space, and technology and advanced engineering – ensuring diverse job opportunities for all the family to take advantage of!
The dental profession has also been developed significantly, with a 39% increase in high-street dentists between 2007 and 2021. That said, there is still plenty of scope for expansion, which means several opportunities for dentists and dental professionals to make the most of everything that living and working in Scotland can offer.
Aside from the many advantages of Scottish life, Clyde Munro offers an array of benefits for all members of their practice teams across the country. These include dedicated career development pathways and educational schemes, competitive salaries, paid GDC fees, enhanced family-friendly policies, ‘you days’ (for moving house, getting married etc.), an extensive support network and help developing in your digital dental journey.

Making the move
The decision to relocate is never made lightly and there are various factors to consider very carefully before making the move. However, when the time is right, the change is made for all the right reasons and the necessary support is enlisted, a relocation can afford countless advantages. Scotland has much to offer individuals, couples and families – why not see what’s available to you?

Helping newly qualified dentists thrive
How Clyde Munro is easing the transition from dental school to practice
Making the transition from dental school to practice can be challenging. As Stuart Collier, who qualified in 2022, points out: “At university, you’re not really used to seeing as many patients throughout the day and there are much longer appointment times. In NHS practices, things are done a lot quicker. In addition, there is extra pressure on you – I am now very aware patients are paying for my services so I really want to do a good job for them!”
Stuart completed his Vocational Training (VT) year under the supervision of Alloway Place Dental Care in Ayr, part of leading Scottish dental group, Clyde Munro. He has utilised Clyde Munro’s Best Foot Forward programme as a way of accessing support specifically tailored to newly qualified dentists in their vocational training year. It consists of multiple educational sessions to support Clyde Munro VT dentists.
The support Stuart received was invaluable. Aside from the networking opportunities available with fellow VTs, it also enables individuals to meet with other, more experienced dentists. The first part of the programme explained how the NHS SDR payments system works in Scotland together with an introduction to implementing digital dentistry into their practice. Digital dentistry is an area that is ever growing throughout the profession, and something Clyde Munro are heavily investing in.
Stuart commented: “The programme bridges the gap between studying at university and working in practice. It offers training on topics that aren’t taught in the undergraduate curriculum, for example, I didn’t know how the payment system worked and I’d not used an intraoral scanner. The digital dentistry aspect was particularly interesting for me. Almost all Clyde Munro practices have digital 3D intraoral scanners and following the training I’ve received I now use it for various aspects of the day-to-day job. The training is very good in this respect.”
Stuart is looking forward to future learning opportunities at surgical training days and further updates on the NHS payment system in light of the changes implemented in Scotland as of November 2023.
His advice for recently qualified colleagues is to be bold. “Just get stuck in!” he says. “Don’t be afraid to try things. You have the safety net of a salary and a team around you to help. Don’t rush, build your skills. Make the most of the courses available and network – dentistry is a small world and the more people you know the better.”
Having studied at University of Glasgow, Stuart returned to his hometown of Ayr to join Clyde Munro following a personal recommendation. He believes he’s made a good decision, adding: “The Best Foot Forward and Flying Start programmes [a career development programme for dentists who have qualified in the last five years] that are only offered for Clyde Munro dentists are great, and are only going to get better. Clyde Munro is very supportive of young, newly qualified dentists by offering the added training sessions which help grow and develop your skills.”

How Clyde Munro’s Best Foot Forward programme supports newly qualified dentists
Dental therapist turned dentist, Bronagh Wishart, is currently working at M&S Dental Care in Fort William, which is part of leading Scottish dental group, Clyde Munro. Bronagh is full of praise for the group’s Best Foot Forward programme following her change in role a year ago.
“I had to get used to a much wider scope of treatments after retraining as a dentist. I had also previously worked mostly in private dentistry, so I needed to learn how the NHS system operates as well” she says. “It was pretty challenging!”
The Best Foot Forward programme consists of three educational sessions to support Clyde Munro Vocational Training Dentists (VTDs).
Bronagh has enjoyed the network opportunities it has presented so far, saying:
“It was good to have a day in Stirling and connect with people in the exact same position as myself. To hear more about the company and the investments it makes in new graduates was great!”
The lecture day proved extremely useful too, as Bronagh continues:
“It offered a refresh on a lot of topics and it was great to hear from John Cameron who taught me at Aberdeen University. He was very informative and it was good to get his advice on what I have to do moving forward as an associate.”
For the future, Bronagh is looking forward to developing her skills and confidence in aesthetic dentistry, while also elevating her treatment planning capabilities.
For now, Bronagh cannot speak too highly of the programme and Clyde Munro:
“It’s really supportive and the staff here are great. I knew going in that I would be supported, but it’s been better than I expected. I really feel like a valued member of the team. Clyde Munro’s investment in technology and equipment is just as evident in the practice. I’m glad to be part of such a progressive company.“I think working for an organisation like Clyde Munro is a huge advantage when starting out as a dentist. Having spoken to colleagues who work in smaller independent practices, I seem to have more of a cushion and a larger support structure available to me. There’s also less pressure on me from the business side to see a high number of patients every day or meet certain targets. I’m not thrown in at the deep-end from the get-go and I appreciate the introduction that this affords to dentistry.”

Solid foundations for a Prosperous Career
There are many challenges for clinicians in their first few years post-qualification. Not only is it a busy time consolidating and developing clinical skills, but there is also much to learn about how a practice operates and how to manage patients. Though the VT training year introduces newly qualified dentists to the practice environment, the pressure can certainly increase once working more independently as an associate.
In order to navigate these early years successfully and lay solid foundations for a long and prosperous career, it is important that newly qualified clinicians have access to support. This may take many different forms, but essentially there should be on-going training available, as well as people to turn to with questions or queries. The result is more capable and confident practitioners, who are able to deliver higher quality dentistry to their patients.
Clyde Munro – the leading dental group in Scotland – understands just how much difference the right support can make to dentists when they’re just starting out. That’s why we provide the Flying Start Programme; a year-long initiative that offers educational and networking benefits to dentists who have qualified in the past few years.
It includes carefully tailored training days that give clinicians an opportunity to advance their skills with leading names in the field, to ask questions and seek bespoke advice from experienced dentists. There is also an important social element to these events, as individuals are able to connect with others in a similar position to them, to share concerns and achievements, and learn from each other.
As a clinician in the early years of his career, Dr James Campbell reflects on some of the aspects he found most difficult as he adjusted to life in the practice:
“The biggest challenge has been maintaining and improving clinical skills against the backdrop of time pressures, various relationships to manage, and different financial systems to work with. It has been a process to adapt to the juggling act of primary care dentistry! Doing all this in the context of a pandemic and without the mentoring support that was available as a student and vocational trainee made it particularly tricky.”
James is currently participating in Clyde Munro’s Flying Start Programme as a way to seek a little extra support. So far, professionals have had access to a session with renowned ethical sales coach, Ashley Latter, as well as covering tooth wear with Dr Andrew Paterson, digital workflows with Dr Callum Graham and sustainability with the Haleon team. Other events explored smile design with Dr Josh Rowey and managing trauma in practice with Dr Beth Burns.
Considering the advantages he has enjoyed to date, James says:
“The Flying Start Programme has been integral to my personal and professional development during this difficult period. It means that there is a network of peers and more experienced colleagues to turn to for support whenever I need it.
“The practical advice, help and training received from experts on aesthetic treatment plans and patient communication has been most helpful for me. I also appreciate the very pragmatic approach and readily applicable content that has been shared.
“The Programme has been expertly conceived, organised and delivered. I am extremely grateful to be part of an organisation that is dedicated to supporting colleagues at all stages of their careers in this way.
“It is my hope that the Programme will help me to improve my confidence and capability in addressing patient needs and delivering the treatment they require. I couldn’t recommend this opportunity more highly to any colleagues out there who may be at a similar stage of their career.”
For any clinicians who are in their early years of dentistry and want to make sure they get the very best start, consider speaking to Clyde Munro. We appreciate the importance of supporting all of our colleagues with training and guidance, especially in those crucial first few years. We also endeavour to create the best working environments, with cutting-edge technologies, high-quality materials and the flexibility to achieve a good work/life balance. Find out more today!

Dental students from Scottish Universities visit Clyde Munro’s Training Academy
As part of its commitment to supporting professional education at every point during clinicians’ careers, Clyde Munro recently delivered training for dental students from Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow. Students were invited to the group’s very own state-of-the-art Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre in Perth, where experienced clinicians offered personal insights and practical guidance.
The training covered exciting topics that were selected in order to expand on the standard curriculum and expose students to new clinical experiences. Training for Dundee students explored clinical photography and digital dentistry, and Glasgow students covered digital dentistry and AI-driven technologies. Dr Amanda Bassey-Duke delivered these two training days and says:
“The students loved it and it was a pleasure to present the training days! The discussion around AI technology in dentistry was particularly popular, as it is technology that many students had previously only dreamt of.
Clyde Munro practices are among the few in Scotland to have access to such equipment. We have everything from in-house CT machines to intraoral scanners, AI-assisted radiography diagnostic software, CEREC machines and an in-house, fully equipped training centre.
Students were impressed to discover that the dentures –which usually take 2 to 3-hour appointments – can be done in just 15 minutes with the latest technology! I think it’s important for students to know what’s available after training and that all of this can be accessed here in Scotland. Clyde Munro has invested a lot in its facilities and in training dentists to ensure they can maintain an exceptional standard of dentistry.
It’s been a fantastic place to work with a forward-thinking team. They also follow through on their promises – I was promised mentorship and access to quality tools, and that’s exactly what I got when I joined.”
Andrew El-Miligy, is a final year dental student from Dundee Dental School. He comments about the day:
“I thoroughly enjoyed how welcoming everyone was. The facilities were fantastic and, overall, it was a really inspiring, comprehensive and useful day, showing why we are putting in all of this hard work at dental school!
The content was extremely relevant to life as a dentist in primary care and definitely expanded on what we are taught in dental school. In particular, I really enjoyed the clinical photography morning with Dr Greg Bowes. This is definitely something that I am wanting to implement during VT and to receive hands-on experience all morning was invaluable.
Regarding Clyde Munro, it seems like a very well-connected dental group with a great network, which is forward thinking and would help to stimulate your professional development.”
Glasgow student, Lara Monaghan, shares her experience:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the entire day and feel very privileged that the Clyde Munro team gave up their Saturday to teach us. I thought that the speakers were very engaging and everyone was very welcoming.
“Although we had received teaching on intraoral scanners in university, it was very beneficial hearing about the pros and cons of using them in the practice. This day also increased my understanding of dentistry from a business perspective. I found this the most enjoyable part as I would want to use the technology in the future. It was also interesting learning about how the intraoral scanner can be used to streamline the process of providing crowns.
“It was clear that Clyde Munro keeps up with the latest technology – I had no idea that something like Pearl AI had been developed let alone was being used across the country to improve patient care. I was very impressed with the training facility too, as it shows Clyde Munro is helping clinicians to learn and improve. It was also great getting to see a state-of-the-art dental clinic like the one in Perth – it is clinics like that we dream of working in when we qualify. I would like to thank Clyde Munro; it was very kind of them to organise transport to Perth and provide food for the day. It was a privilege and a pleasure.”
When Aberdeen dental students visited the Clyde Munro Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre, they focused on composite restorations and material science, led by Dr Bruce Duguid. He adds:
“This was an opportunity to show students what a ‘normal’ GDP, who works hard in practice, can achieve. It was also great to work in our wonderful training centre for the day, getting students out of their normal learning environment and away from the usual pressures to have some fun while trying new things. The new composite materials and techniques we covered were accessible to all students from every year – they all did very well and it was well-received. In fact, it was lovely to see such an enthusiastic and wide-eyed group of dental students and reassuring to know that the future of our profession is in safe hands.”

Aberdeen Dental Society student shares his thoughts on Clyde Munro’s Training Facility
In January, Clyde Munro Dental Group organised a theory and practical session about Composites at the Advanced Dentistry and Clinical Skills centre in Perth. Sixteen students took part in this exclusive training day lead by Bruce Duguid, Associate Dentist and part of the Clinical Team at Clyde Munro.
Jack Ferguson, the social representative at Aberdeen Dental Society, attended this exciting day. Here’s what he had to say about the experience:
When we arrived at the Clyde Munro training facility in Perth, we were greeted by Nora who brought us in for breakfast. The coffee and bakes were a lovely touch, which helped us get settled straight into the talk from Dr Diguid about the history, science, and art of composite restorations.
It was interesting to hear from him as well as find out more about Coltene products and what they bring to the market. After the talk was finished, we went straight into the clinical skills room. The facilities were amazing, and I was able to use a microscope for the first time – game changer! We were doing class 2 restoration preps during the first session, which was supervised by Dr Diguid. It was helpful to see different techniques from him and my peers, as this type of preparation can be difficult.
The final session was filling our preparations from earlier. I unfortunately did not have an awful lot of time to fill my own cavity, but watching more experienced clinicians utilise the full capability of Coltene composite products has inspired me to develop my technique further.
Overall, a great day was had by everyone who went down. Thanks again to Clyde Munro for having us. It was a pleasure.

A highly supportive environment
“It was good to have a day in Stirling and connect with people in the exact same position as myself. To hear more about the company and the investments it makes in new graduates was great!
“The lectures offered a refresh on a lot of topics and it was great to hear from John Cameron who taught me at Aberdeen University. He was very informative and it was good to get his advice on what I have to do moving forward as an associate.”
“Clyde Munro is really supportive and the staff here are great. I knew going in that I would be supported, but it’s been better than I expected. I really feel like a valued member of the team. Clyde Munro’s investment in technology and equipment is just as evident in the practice. I’m glad to be part of such a progressive company.”
