That’s why – amongst various other valuable offerings – Clyde Munro Dental Group has prioritised education and training for all members of its practices with the dedicated Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre.

What’s the goal? To provide all professionals with access to an array of courses that will develop skills, support career aspirations and inspire greatness. This training facility is an investment from Clyde Munro into its people, their futures and the quality of patient care that can be delivered in practices across Scotland. Even in its first year of being established, the centre has already benefited hundreds of individuals keen to advance their knowledge and confidence in a variety of clinical and non-clinical areas.

Ensuring the relevance of topics covered for dentists, the course list has been designed based on feedback from associates. We asked, they answered and we responded. We are also proud to offer training led by some of our own clinicians who have extensive talents and experience in the educational field too. All courses for dentists are offered at significantly subsidised rates, as are programmes for dental nurses, VTs, dental hygienists/therapists and practice managers – with many of these delivered for free.

In 2024, there is a wide range of topics being explored. For dentists, these include endodontics, IPR and retention, pain management, composite veneers, crown prep, oral surgery and CBCT training, with a mixture of hands-on practical courses and theoretical programmes. Dental nurses have gained access to dedicated education in orthodontic photography and impression taking, with all team members benefiting from mental health first aider and safeguarding training.

Aside from the quality and accessibility of the training and education available, Clyde Munro has also created exceptional, purpose-built training facilities which further set them apart in the profession. On the premises, we have a teaching room with nine phantom heads, adjacent to a fully functional dental surgery with comprehensive AV set-up, as well as a CBCT room. This means that there is capacity for clinicians to observe live surgeries from the room or remotely, enriching the learning experience significantly.

To equip this facility, Clyde Munro chose to work with a leading supplier of dental technology that shares the same ethos for clinical excellence – Dentsply Sirona. Already an equipment partner of the group, the company was the natural choice for the facility. Many of the courses are available to professionals outside the Clyde Munro group as well, though our own members receive significant discounts and can access an online portal for easy booking, CPD certificate storage and more.

Transitioning from VT to Associate Dentist with Clyde Munro Dental Group

Post-qualification

With a network of talented and highly experienced clinicians across the group, we offer expert mentorship for VTs throughout their training. 

The standard VT study days are complemented by Clyde Munro’s own Best Foot Forward Programme, further improving each dentist’s transition into an associate role. This provides additional training days throughout the year, covering important topics that we feel VTs need to understand as they lay solid foundations for a long and successful career in dentistry. Sessions explore technology that utilises artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on patient care, including how it facilitates the reading of radiographs for accurate diagnostics and improves patient communication.

The programme also aims to build confidence in endodontics, help individuals maximise opportunities as self-employed contractors, and enable dentists to better manage their stress for enhanced wellbeing. We appreciate the pressure that dentists can be under, so we feel it is especially important to help our clinicians optimise their own physical and mental health, as well as their patients’. 

Dr Paul Capanni said in his VT year:

Early careers

Leading them is Callum Graham, Clinical Director at Clyde Munro. He says:

“Mentoring and support are very important for dentists at all stages of their careers. From early careers to experienced dentists, the Clinical Support Team can help with treatment planning for everything from endodontics to orthodontics, routine care, implants and more. We are a clinical business that is clinically driven, so we need that peer-to-peer contact to provide help, support and encouragement to dentists should they want it. Having expanded our team recently, we now have more opportunity to connect with more clinicians across the group.

“With first-hand experience of the challenges and nuances of dentistry today, we are well-placed to offer appropriate guidance and support for peers. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with postgrad education, to trial new techniques and try innovative technologies – and I absolutely loved the variety. I want to help instil this ethos and passion for dentistry across the group. There are so many great dentists out there and so much innovation with the digital revolution, this is an exciting time to be involved and I want to help as many people as possible to get the most from it all.”

Mr Charlie Evans also advocates for the opportunity to share knowledge, discuss problems, and help each other, saying:

“To be able to share concerns, promote successes and be on hand to offer second opinions to varying clinical situations is important, whatever stage of their career a clinician is at. Dentistry can be isolating, even when you are in a large team, so external clinical support, feedback and review should be encouraged.

Several individuals on the Clinical Support Team offer many years of experience from different areas, ensuring that they can help peers with a vast range of challenges and queries. Dr David McColl brings more than 37 years of experience working within NHS dentistry to his role on the Clinical Support Team. He details a recent example of how he’s helped a colleague:

“One of our experienced dentists and I recently had a discussion regarding a challenging case. We were faced with a high caries rate, loss of posterior support, the recent loss of an anterior tooth and upper denture provision. The patient was not adapting well to the denture and had requested an upper anterior bridge. The conditions for such a bridge were far from ideal and an implant was not an option due to affordability. Discussion on case management, patient expectation and what would be deliverable under the NHS enabled a way forward in this challenging situation.

“I’m very happy to help practitioners find their way through the complex system under which we operate within the NHS as part of the Clyde Munro Clinical Support Team.”

Bruce Duguid also has decades of experience, having worked in dentistry for 28 years and with Clyde Munro for about 2 years. He highlights the benefit of having access to support within an extensive network of professionals:

Supporting dentists from all walks of life

For any dentists looking to permanently move to the UK from overseas, or those who have already, finding the right job is an essential part of a successful experience. Though true for any clinician, navigating the additional challenges that can arise when relocating means that the team around you and the support available is even more important.

Though she moved to the UK in 2016, Dr Despoina Christidou realised in the following years just how crucial the team she worked within was for her job satisfaction.

Here she shares her story:

“I qualified from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and practised dentistry in the country for the next 31 years, including in my own private practice. However, when my personal circumstances changed and challenges arose with the organisation, I took this as an opportunity to try something completely different.

“I had been thinking about relocating for some time and Scotland was really appealing. I was interested in the history of the country and both the scenery and people made the move attractive. I moved to Scotland almost 9 years ago now and I have not been disappointed.  

“At the time that I relocated, the greatest challenge was learning all the new regulations and requirements. I had not been aware of several rules until working in a UK dental practice so there was a steep learning curve in the first 6 months. During this and the next few years, I learnt exactly what it is that I value most in the places that I work. It’s not the instruments, the technologies or the look of practice that makes the biggest difference for me – though these are still important – it’s the team around me.”

In 2023, Despoina was looking for the next step to further her career in Scotland. This is when she turned to Clyde Munro.

“When I came across a vacancy at KF Dental in Edinburgh with Clyde Munro, I was instantly interested,” she continues. “My initial impression and further research suggested it would be a great place to work, so I took my chances and moved over – and I’m very happy that I did!

Supported development for new dental therapists 

Dental therapists are essential members of the dental team, helping to ensure that patients receive high-quality care. They contribute significantly to the skill mix of the modern dental practice, making sure that patients are seen efficiently and by the right professionals. Clyde Munro understands this and has created a dedicated educational programme for all dental therapists who join the group. This has been designed for newly qualified professionals, helping them to consolidate and expand their clinical capabilities in a range of relevant areas. 

The year-long programme builds on dental therapists’ existing skills, allowing them to confidently work within their full scope of practice for the delivery of exceptional patient care. It puts prevention at the core of all topics discussed, which include:

  • Preventative treatment and advice, fluoride varnish application, fissure sealants and delivery of Childsmile (an initiative aiming to reduce oral health inequalities in children across Scotland)
  • Restorations on deciduous teeth, including stainless steel crowns and pulpotomies
  • Extractions of deciduous teeth
  • Direct restorations on permanent teeth in adults and children
  • Periodontal treatment, BPE and full pocket depth recording and monitoring

Considering the advantages he has enjoyed to date, James says:

How Clyde Munro’s Best Foot Forward programme supports newly qualified dentists

Dental therapist turned dentist, Bronagh Wishart, is currently working at M&S Dental Care in Fort William, which is part of leading Scottish dental group, Clyde Munro. Bronagh is full of praise for the group’s Best Foot Forward programme following her change in role a year ago. 

“I had to get used to a much wider scope of treatments after retraining as a dentist. I had also previously worked mostly in private dentistry, so I needed to learn how the NHS system operates as well” she says. “It was pretty challenging!”

The Best Foot Forward programme consists of three educational sessions to support Clyde Munro Vocational Training Dentists (VTDs). 

Bronagh has enjoyed the network opportunities it has presented so far, saying:

“It was good to have a day in Stirling and connect with people in the exact same position as myself. To hear more about the company and the investments it makes in new graduates was great!”

The lecture day proved extremely useful too, as Bronagh continues:

“It offered a refresh on a lot of topics and it was great to hear from John Cameron who taught me at Aberdeen University. He was very informative and it was good to get his advice on what I have to do moving forward as an associate.” 

For the future, Bronagh is looking forward to developing her skills and confidence in aesthetic dentistry, while also elevating her treatment planning capabilities. 

For now, Bronagh cannot speak too highly of the programme and Clyde Munro:

“It’s really supportive and the staff here are great. I knew going in that I would be supported, but it’s been better than I expected. I really feel like a valued member of the team. Clyde Munro’s investment in technology and equipment is just as evident in the practice. I’m glad to be part of such a progressive company.

“I think working for an organisation like Clyde Munro is a huge advantage when starting out as a dentist. Having spoken to colleagues who work in smaller independent practices, I seem to have more of a cushion and a larger support structure available to me. There’s also less pressure on me from the business side to see a high number of patients every day or meet certain targets. Helping newly qualified dentists thrive

How Clyde Munro is easing the transition from dental school to practice 

Making the transition from dental school to practice can be challenging. As Stuart Collier, who qualified in 2022, points out: “At university, you’re not really used to seeing as many patients throughout the day and there are much longer appointment times. In NHS practices, things are done a lot quicker. In addition, there is extra pressure on you – I am now very aware patients are paying for my services so I really want to do a good job for them!”

Stuart completed his Vocational Training (VT) year under the supervision of Alloway Place Dental Care in Ayr, part of leading Scottish dental group, Clyde Munro. He has utilised Clyde Munro’s Best Foot Forward programme as a way of accessing support specifically tailored to newly qualified dentists in their vocational training year. It consists of multiple educational sessions to support Clyde Munro VT dentists.

The support Stuart received was invaluable. Aside from the networking opportunities available with fellow VTs, it also enables individuals to meet with other, more experienced dentists. The first part of the programme explained how the NHS SDR payments system works in Scotland together with an introduction to implementing digital dentistry into their practice. Digital dentistry is an area that is ever growing throughout the profession, and something Clyde Munro are heavily investing in.  

Stuart commented: “The programme bridges the gap between studying at university and working in practice. It offers training on topics that aren’t taught in the undergraduate curriculum, for example, I didn’t know how the payment system worked and I’d not used an intraoral scanner. The digital dentistry aspect was particularly interesting for me. Almost all Clyde Munro practices have digital 3D intraoral scanners and following the training I’ve received I now use it for various aspects of the day-to-day job. The training is very good in this respect.”

Stuart is looking forward to future learning opportunities at surgical training days and further updates on the NHS payment system in light of the changes implemented in Scotland as of November 2023.

His advice for recently qualified colleagues is to be bold. “Just get stuck in!” he says. “Don’t be afraid to try things. You have the safety net of a salary and a team around you to help. Don’t rush, build your skills. Make the most of the courses available and network – dentistry is a small world and the more people you know the better.”

Having studied at University of Glasgow, Stuart returned to his hometown of Ayr to join Clyde Munro following a personal recommendation. He believes he’s made a good decision, adding: “The Best Foot Forward and Flying Start programmes [a career development programme for dentists who have qualified in the last five years] that are only offered for Clyde Munro dentists are great, and are only going to get better. Clyde Munro is very supportive of young, newly qualified dentists by offering the added training sessions which help grow and develop your skills.”
