‘My hands used to shake with nerves – now I’m a Peterhead dentist’

When Philipp first started dental school, he was filled with excitement and ambition, but also an underlying fear. The hands-on nature of dentistry, the responsibility for patients, and the pressure to be perfect triggered intense anxiety that sometimes made even simple tasks feel overwhelming.

“I really wanted to be a dentist,” Philipp recalls, “but my mind just wasn’t playing ball. I was nervous stepping into clinics, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome that if I wanted to achieve my dream.”

Moving to Aberdeen for his postgraduate degree, Philipp quickly realised that managing this anxiety would be just as important as mastering the technical skills of dentistry and without addressing the issue – his dream career was hanging in the balance.

“I was physically shaking when I first started practicing practical skills,” he recalls. “I really wanted to be a dentist, but my mind just wasn’t playing ball. Anxiety was holding me back.”

During his second year, a pause in clinical activity – caused by Covid – gave Philipp an unexpected opportunity. “It was a chance to step back, reflect, and focus on myself,” he says. “I worked on strategies to manage my anxiety – mindfulness, structured practice, and self-reflection. Slowly, I started building the confidence I needed to face patients. That time really empowered me to become the dentist I wanted to be.”

By his final year, Philipp had passed all his exams and treatment requirements, graduating as a competent trainee dentist, or ‘safe beginner.’

“I left dental school knowing I could do the work, but confidence was still a journey. It felt similar to how I started, just a little stronger and more capable.”

Philipp initially planned to leave Aberdeen and trained for a VT position in England after receiving his first offer, but during the interview process for a position in Ellon, he met his future mentor, Harriet Liddicott, who would turn out to be pivotal in his journey.

“Harriet was everything I could have hoped for in a trainer,” Philipp explains. “Along with the incredible support from dental nurses Sanija Gorodko and Melissa McLean, she gave me the tools, guidance, and confidence to thrive. Honestly, she saved my career. Without her mentorship, I might have left dentistry entirely.”

His year in Ellon allowed Philipp to grow into the dentist he had always hoped to be. “I gained independence while knowing I had support when I needed it. I learned not just clinical skills, but how to connect with patients and manage my own growth as a professional. That mentorship transformed my career.”

After completing VT, Philipp moved to Peterhead with Clyde Munro. “I went into dentistry to help people,” he says. “Communities outside city centres need access to high-quality care, and I wanted to be part of that.”

With Russian heritage on his mum, Olga’s side, he is able to communicate with the Russian-speaking patients in the local community, helping them feel understood and at ease. “It’s amazing how much a language connection can calm people,” he says.

“It’s also quite funny how surprised patients are when I am able to speak to them in Russian.”

Philipp hopes that sharing his story and overcoming his anxiety helps others navigating the early years of dentistry. And, for those about to embark on their VT placements, he strongly encourages dentists to consider joining practices outside the city centre for quality, fulfilling dentist experiences.

Philipp’s day-to-day work includes fillings, root canals, and caring for anxious patients. He is also pursuing sedation training to meet local demand and help those who might otherwise struggle to access treatment.

“Ultimately, dentistry is about helping people,” he says. “Overcoming my anxiety taught me that challenges don’t define you. With the right support, persistence, and self-belief, you can achieve your goals. Mentorship, patience, and the encouragement from my fiancée, Beth, played a huge role in helping me become the dentist I am today.”

Philipp encourages recent graduates to consider rural placements as a unique way to gain broad experience and make a real difference in communities that need care.

Clyde Munro practices are now welcoming applications from graduate dentists looking for VT placements, offering support, training, and opportunities to work with the latest digital and AI technologies.

For entry-level dentists looking to continue their professional growth after VT, Clyde Munro’s Flying Start Programme offers an exceptional opportunity. This year-long, fully supported initiative provides up to 25 hours of CPD through hands-on training in communication, restorative dentistry, endodontics, and oral surgery, all led by experienced clinicians. Beyond skill development, the programme fosters a network of peers and mentors, helping early-career dentists gain confidence, share experiences, and accelerate their journey in modern, patient-focused dental care.

Empowering the Dental Nurses of the Future

To maximise the many career opportunities available, dental nurses must have access to the training, support, and encouragement they need. For many, this relies on working within an environment conducive to development, surrounded by people who actively facilitate progression.

This is the culture that we endeavour to build across Clyde Munro Dental Group. We understand the impact that our dental nurses have on the quality of patient care provided, as well as on the daily efficiency of our practices. To optimise both while giving professionals the opportunities they deserve to fulfil their career ambitions, we have partnered with Ident Training.

Introducing Ident Training

Established specifically to provide courses for dental nurses, Ident Training offers a number of programmes designed to improve individuals’ knowledge and practical skills. Classes are delivered primarily online, with hands-on days elevating the quality of teaching. There is a range of 90-minute sessions for Clyde Munro dental nurses held on Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes, ensuring convenience and accessibility for all.

Helen Donaghy, Director and Centre Manager of Ident Training, commented: “Ident uses an online portfolio for their students’ tasks, which holds all the resources they need for each unit and the full course. Here, we assist students in building a portfolio of evidence, with a wide range of methods to gather the key components required for the programme.

“We have a good understanding of the needs of Clyde Munro as a company, and subsequently, their trainees. The achievement rate of the Dental Nurse qualification is excellent, and we hope to continue with this successful partnership in the future.”

Striving for excellence

This training is available as part of the Strive Programme – a 12-month, fully-funded training programme dedicated to trainee dental nurses. The year of education concludes with an SVQ qualification in Dental Nursing and is supported by access to additional education at the dedicated Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre.

For anyone passionate about helping people and facilitating the delivery of excellent care, consider a career in dental nursing. We would love to help you lay the foundations for decades of success at Clyde Munro!

Expanding Specialist Care, Strengthening Our Network

Originally from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire and now based just outside Glasgow, Oral Surgeon – Andrew Brewer – brings more than 40 years of surgical expertise to Clyde Munro’s Torwood Dental Practice in Inverness. Upon graduating from Leeds University, Andrew began his career as a clinical tutor in oral surgery before moving into specialist roles across England and Scotland.

His early work in Barnsley, Raigmore, and general practice in Grantown-on-Spey was followed by more than three decades as an Associate Specialist in Oral Surgery at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary. During that time, he provided surgical care for medically compromised patients including those undergoing major heart procedures, kidney treatment, or intensive care stays, where his dental interventions helped reduce life-threatening infections such as ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Andrew’s career has been defined by a commitment to delivering high-quality surgical care with a strong patient focus. He is listed on the General Dental Council’s specialist lists for both oral surgery and special care dentistry, and he holds a membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow.

Additionally, Andrew was involved in the management of patients taking anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs as well as patients with congenital bleeding disorders. He is a member of the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) and served as chair of the WFH’s dental committee for six years. He has been involved in the development of both UK and international guidelines for the dental care of this patient group.

Now focusing solely on his role with Clyde Munro, Andrew has set up a monthly oral surgery clinic at Torwood Dental Practice. He said: “What we’re doing in Inverness is delivering safe, effective oral surgery in a way that makes it easier for both patients and referring dentists.

“Instead of two or more appointments, we aim to complete a comprehensive consultation and treatment in just one visit. This allows for a simpler pathway and makes a real difference for patients travelling from across the Highlands.”

Andrew continued: “I’ve had a very positive and long-standing relationship with Clyde Munro for many years as even before joining them directly, I was regularly receiving referrals from their dentists.

“Since starting to work with them part-time, the experience has been nothing but positive and supportive. There’s a genuine shared ethos of clinical excellence and a strong commitment to making specialist care accessible, especially in rural communities.”

Andrew’s appointment at Torwood Dental Practice is part of Clyde Munro’s wider commitment to clinical excellence and broadening access to specialist dentistry across Scotland.

Commitment to Scotland’s Dental Sector

As part of its ongoing commitment to improving the quality of care and expanding its clinical and practice teams, Clyde Munro has confirmed it will welcome 18 new dentists to its practices this year, making significant strides to improve patient access in both urban and rural locations. This includes recruiting in rural areas where access to dental care can be more challenging. An example of the group’s success so far is the substantial growth of its Fort William practice – M&S Dental Care – which is now the biggest in the group, with 13 clinicians and a further two joining later this year.

In addition to expanding its team, Clyde Munro is prioritising the development of its people through new training programmes. This includes using the Advanced Dentistry & Clinical Skills Centre to offer early career dentists and therapists the chance to enhance their skills.

Recently announced investment plans will support significant infrastructure development, including the expansion and refurbishment of existing practices to accommodate new dentists and surgeries. In areas where current premises are no longer suitable for future growth, Clyde Munro will work to secure new premises to support the group’s ongoing success.
